Strategies of Proselytization in Zhou Anshi’s Direct Access to the Return to the Western Paradise The Buddhist layman Zhou Anshi (1656-1739) spent his entire life converting people to Buddhism; in particular, he exhorted them to believe and seek rebirth in the Pure Land. He composed several works for this purpose including the Xigui zhizhi (Direct Access to the Return to the Western Paradise). At the turn of the previous century they received high accolade from the venerable monk Yin Guang (1861-1940) who promoted them enthusiastically. Consequently, Zhou’s works enjoyed wide circulation and are still distributed for free by Buddhist organizations in Hong Kong and Taiwan. This paper examines Zhou’s strategies of exhorting the laity to Buddhism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with a focus on his Xigui zhizhi. 周安士《西归直指》的宣教策略 清代佛教居士周安士（1656-1739）毕生竭力劝信，尤以指引众生回心求生净土为念。周氏在世编撰《万善先资》、《欲海回狂》、《阴骘文广义》以及《西归直指》数种，目的都在劝信修善。周氏著作民初深获当时大德印光大师（1861-1940）高度赞扬推介，影响颇大，直至最近周氏著作依然是香港、台湾广为流传的佛教结缘品。本文将以《西归直指》为据，旁及周氏其他三种著作，分析周氏在清代中叶以前如何推广居士佛教。 |
